Where Jazz meets the Spirit

The uniquely AMERICAN TRADITION OF JAZZ VESPERS began in New York City in the 1960s. Pastor John Gensel of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in New York City befriended the city’s musicians and designed a service of prayer and jazz for folks who couldn’t make it to Sunday morning services after playing late night gigs on Saturday night.

Since that time, JAZZ VESPERS has been part of many church and synagogue services in New York, Chicago, Seattle and Detroit. Now we have brought it to Denver in our pioneering attempt to revive the Jazz Vespers tradition here.

VESPERS comes from the Jewish tradition of offering sacrifices in the evening. The word “vespers” is Latin literally meaning “evening” and it is sometimes called “evensong.” The evening sacrifice in the synagogue was accompanied by reading Psalm 141:

“May my prayer be set before you like incense;

may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.”

The early Christian church tradition added the lighting of candles along with the burning of incense.

Jazz musicians such as DUKE ELLINGTON, DAVE BRUBECK, WYNSTON MARSALIS and PAT METHENY have had a long tradition of involvement in interpreting jazz music in a religious context.
